What the barrier is meant to achieve
Brick and mortar contain pores through which water can move. A correctly specified chemical damp proof course is intended to reduce capillary uptake at the treatment line. It does not extract existing water, remove salts or repair every source of damp in a building.
Rain penetrating around openings, plumbing leaks and room-air condensation need different measures. High ground or bridging materials may also allow moisture around an existing barrier. Before choosing chemical damp proofing, ask which evidence supports the diagnosis and why simpler defect repairs are insufficient. Our damp proof course service explains the company's treatment and assessment process.
DPC cream and treated rods use different delivery methods
DPC cream is introduced into drilled holes according to the product specification, commonly along an appropriate mortar bed. Treated rods are inserted into prepared holes and deliver their active material through a different format. Both approaches depend on the manufacturer's instructions and suitable construction.
Dry rod damp proofing is not a physical sheet laid through the wall, and cream is not ordinary mortar or sealant. Compare the system's suitability for the wall, not simply whether one is easier to handle. Do not mix product methods or assume hole sizes, spacing and preparation are interchangeable. The approved specification should determine installation details, including junctions and changes in wall level.
Construction matters before drilling begins
Wall thickness, mortar condition, cavities, rubble-filled sections and changes in construction can affect how a treatment is specified. A clear continuous treatment line may be more complicated near stairs, floors, doorways or adjoining walls than along an unobstructed masonry run.
Traditional buildings require careful investigation and compatible repairs; unnecessary intervention may miss the moisture source. Historic England's moisture investigation guidance supports diagnosis before treatment. Locate concealed services and discuss safe preparation. Homeowners should not drill a line of holes based on an online illustration without checking construction, existing barriers and the system's requirements.
Preparation and quantities follow the chosen system
The installer needs access to the treatment line and a plan for vulnerable fittings, finishes and waste. Hole dimensions, cleanliness, spacing and the amount of cream or number of rods must follow the exact product instructions. Consumption changes with wall thickness and the practical specification.
A tube does not have a universal wall-length coverage. Our damp proofing cost guide explains quantities as one cost factor among access, preparation and reinstatement. The quotation should distinguish the chemical treatment from plaster removal and later finishing. Stretching a product by changing spacing or underfilling holes undermines the specified approach rather than saving on an equivalent job.
What happens to the wall afterwards
Masonry can retain water after a new barrier is installed, and contaminated plaster may still respond to humidity. Drying varies with thickness, moisture loading and finishes. An injected course therefore should not be judged solely by whether a surface looks dry immediately afterwards.
The recommendation may include suitable salt-resistant replastering and decoration guidance. Check that continuing leaks or bridging have been addressed too. A replacement finish should not create a new moisture bridge at floor level. Keep the installation details and maintenance advice with the work records so a later assessor can understand what was actually treated, rather than relying only on a certificate or a date.
Ask the installer how the treatment connects around interruptions and how the proposed line relates to the existing floor. A wall may look straightforward in a room photograph while changes of material complicate the barrier. Keep the product name and specified method with the quotation. If a later alteration raises outside ground or adds bridging finishes, mention the earlier DPC to the contractor so the new work does not unintentionally bypass the treated zone.
Service life and the certificate are different questions
The longevity of an injected chemical DPC depends on the system, suitability and installation and on later changes that may bypass it. There is no universal lifespan to promise for all walls. Manufacturer documentation and the particular work specification provide a better basis than a general online claim.
Damp Pro and Co provides a 20-year guarantee certificate on completed DPC work and payment. Read the DPC guarantee guide for the distinction between treatment cover and other work. Need it sorted? Questions about this topic
What is a chemical DPC injection?
It introduces a specified water-repellent treatment into suitable masonry to limit rising moisture. It is not a cure for leaks, penetrating rain or condensation.
Cream vs rods: what's the difference?
Cream is introduced as a formulation into drilled holes; treated rods are inserted as solid carriers. Each has its own specification, suitability and preparation requirements.
How long does an injected DPC last?
There is no universal duration across products and walls. Suitability, installation and later bridging matter; check manufacturer information and the particular guarantee separately.
Does an injection immediately remove salts?
No. A barrier does not extract salts or instantly dry the wall. Contaminated finishes and retained moisture need their own treatment and drying plan.
